Impact of the activities of recycling of materials on the environment
Basic principles which NORD HOLDING AD observes when dealing with issues related to environmental protection:
1. Preventing, reducing and limiting the harmful effects of waste on the environment.
NORD HOLDING AD apply a systematic method of approach to solving of the issues of environmental protection.
The main purpose is to reduce the quantities of metal waste with production and domestic origin in the country, which are not covered by the recycling systems.
The even rhythm of their accumulation in order their regular transfer to the steel industry for subsequent treatment, prevents the occurrence of pollution on the environment due to prolonged storage.
2. Recycling and utilization of waste.
The recycling of waste in the sense of an activity of recovery and resumption of their raw-material properties, is a fundamental base for the development of the activity of NORD HOLDING AD.
Achieving the optimum amount of stored materials through their purposeful acceptance is based on approved schemes for their further movement in the direction of recycling.
NORD HOLDING AD aims at achieving the best possible European practices for the preparation of waste materials for recycling, by optimizing all processes from input to output of ready for use in the manufacture raw materials. Shortening the time to prepare and recycle waste reduces the possibility of occurrence of adverse effects on human health and the environment.
3. Ecological depositing of waste and recycling.
With the purpose of ecological recycling and recovery of waste, where the danger to human health or environmental pollution does not exceed permissible limits, the activity is organized through the implementation of specific measures for the storage of waste in special containers for separate storage, closed warehouses , purchase of modern equipment for the processing, loading-unloading and transportation.
4. Benefits of waste recycling.
One of the most significant contributions of the processing of secondary metals and other materials that is at the root of the activities of NORD HOLDING AD, is to protect the environment and reduce the energy required to produce one tonne of material.
The use of secondary raw materials means using fewer natural resources that would be needed to produce new metal compounds such as iron ore into steel production; nickel for stainless steel or bauxite for the extraction of aluminum.
Except that, recycling of waste contributes to the reduction of energy use and reduce harmful CO2 emissions in production methods.
Processing of waste metals, used in the production of new metal products saves energy, as follows:
- Aluminum – 95%
- Copper – 85%
- Lead – 60%
- Steel waste – 62-74%
Processing of 1 ton of waste paper for its part saves:
- 800 kWh electrical energy
- 800 кг kg cellulose
- 200 m2 water
- 1740 liters of fuel
- saves 17 trees
- Processing 1 ton of plastic waste contributes to the saving of:
- 2360 kWh electrical energy
- 2,2 tons of oil
Processing 1 ton of glass waste saves:
- 530 kWh electrical energy
- 200 kg fuel oil
- 720 kg quartz sand
- 300 kg calcined soda
- 180 kg of calcium oxide
According to data from the European Community, the use of recycled waste reduces emissions of CO2 by about 200 mln. tons per year.
In addition to the conservation of energy sources and natural resources, recycling of materials reduces the activities in extracting raw materials that disturb the ecosystems.
